How elearning works at Comenius University

This text contains a short summary of principles of elearning and use of Moodle at Comenius University. More general information on elearning, its history within the University etc. can be found at the University website. Elearning at the Comenius University is managed by the Center for Information Technologies (CIT). Comenius University provides support for MS Teams and LMS (Learning Management System) Moodle. Every teacher or employee of the University can use Moodle for teaching and communication with students.

Teachers, employees and students of Comenius University use their university login and password, the same one used to access other online services within the University systems such as email, Academic Information System (AIS) etc.

Besides transfer of login data, Moodle is not integrated with AIS in any other way. Courses in Moodle are not created automatically when created in AIS, students also donât get signed into the Moodle courses automatically. Use of Moodle for online, combined or support of face-to-face teaching is voluntary and Moodle database contains only courses of the teachers who decided to use Moodle and requested their course to be opened by administrators at CIT.

Every year during summer CIT upgrades Moodle to a new version. Usually the upgraded version gets created as a new installation of Moodle for the following academic year. All the courses used in the previous academic year get automatically transferred into the new year, cleaned from student data and ready to be reused in the new year. Old installations of Moodle with all student work stay accessible for reference.

So, if a teacher requests a course to be opened in one academic year, she does not need to request it to be reopened again for the following year, it will get transferred automatically.

After CIT opens a course for a teacher, the teacher receives full administrative rights within the course. The teacher is then fully responsible for content of teaching materials and for obtaining publishing rights if necessary. The teacher also controls access of students into the course. The students who signed up for the course in AIS are not automatically signed for the course in Moodle. The teacher needs to sign them up or enable them to sign up by themselves.
